Analysis of Membrane Processes in the Introduction to Chemical Engineering Course
Abstract The introductory Chemical Engineering course at Delaware is focused on engineering analysis and the solution of transient material balances. Most transient balance problems, e.g., tank draining, generate little enthusiasm among the students. Membrane systems provide interesting problems that illustrate the key concepts and give students experience with "real-world" applications. Examples include the production of apple juice concentrate using reverse osmosis, removal of impurities from therapeutic proteins using diafiltration, and urea transport during hemodialysis. |
